ACTIVE WAITING

We spend a lot of time waiting in our lives…

Waiting for bread to rise-

Waiting to grow up or having our children grow out of the terrible 2’s-

Waiting for a health issue to be diagnosed or healed-

Waiting to meet the right person or find the right job-

Waiting in line at the grocery store or in traffic-

Waiting for justice to be realized in our world-

Waiting for signs of hope, anywhere, everywhere.

As women of faith, we draw courage and patience from one another and from God as we wait.  Rather than push through to end prematurely a time of waiting, what might it look like to lean into it, explore it , savor it and practice what is called active waiting?

At our 2019 one-day Women’s Spa for the Soul—and at our weekend spiritual retreat in April—you’ll have an opportunity to consider the richness of active waiting.  Hannah Anderson, life coach and Episcopal artist-priest, will present seven different energetic levels and how they can be applied to liminal times like waiting.

At our Spa on January 26, through her welcoming remarks and one of several small-group workshops, Hannah will offer the opportunity to explore these concepts in our daily lives to release greater joy.

THE REV. CANON HANNAH ANDERSON is the retired Canon to the Ordinary of the Episcopal Diocese of New Hampshire, having served from 2013-2018.  She was ordained in 1994.  Prior to serving in New Hampshire, Hannah was Rector of parishes in four other dioceses and a diocesan staff member (part-time) in three of those dioceses.  She received her doctoral degree in Advanced Congregational Studies from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in 2008.

Her doctoral thesis ‘Being an Artist-Priest’ is being re-written into book form as she studies the essential nature of the creative process in adaptive leadership.

Hannah is now exercising her entrepreneurial skills in her start-up company, Golden Thread Coaching and Consultation.  She is a certified life coach, (IPEC) working with individuals and organizations as people find their way through the many challenges and changes in life.  Art and creativity, two of her passions, play a key role to Hannah’s capacity to support people through coaching and spiritual presence.

She is married to the Rev. Bob Anderson, retired CPE Supervisor and hospital chaplain.  They have three adult sons and four grandchildren. Together, they have a particular concern for vulnerable and marginalized people as the gap between privilege and poverty widens.

SPA OFFERINGS     Our Spa will provide you both peace and solitude and wonderful connections with other South Church women.  Following Hannah’s opening presentation, participants will partake in a variety of 45-minute morning and afternoon workshops that offer diverse spiritual tools and practices.  Both lunch and a light supper will be offered. The Church’s labyrinth will be available in the afternoon. Together we will also worship and participate in a special service project.

COST:  $30 per person includes lunch and supper.  Participants will be asked to bring a snack or dessert to share and/or a donation for the Church’s Blessing Box.

If financial concerns limit your participation, please speak confidentially to Rev. Carlos Jauhola-Straight about the availability of scholarship funds. These funds were donated by participants of past South Church Women’s Retreats to help make these retreats available to all South Church women.  Availing yourselves of these funds will honor their hopes and have no impact on South Church’s operations or mission work.

OVERVIEW OF WORKSHOPS

The Joyful Adventure of Unleashing Our Divine Purpose - Kit DeVries

Our Christian beliefs challenge us to grow up and become partners with God.  In psychology we learn that mid-life and beyond are our individual opportunities to play – “the third stage of individuation.”   When we combine God’s will and our psychological beliefs we enter a new life of play and adventure.  Come, learn to play with God’s will for our lives.

Gentle Yoga- Becca Cleary

An introduction for women with limited mobility and/or no yoga experience.  Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes. Chairs will be provided; mats are not necessary.

Exploring Yoga- Becca Cleary

A more active session than the Gentle Yoga class, this is for women with any level of yoga experience who can easily move from the floor to standing.  Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes and bring a mat if you have one.

Active Waiting - Hannah Anderson

Explore further the concepts introduced in Hannah’s welcoming session as they pertain to your daily life to release greater joy.

Feeling the Flow of the Holy Spirit With Veil Dancing- JoAnn Miles Holmes

JoAnne will bring her box of colorful veils and teach the group basic veil dancing movements including dances for individuals and group patterns.  Feel the flowy fun and the graceful graciousness of God.  All are welcome and adaptions can be made for any physical challenges.

Prayer Zendala: CZT Certified Instructors Fran Irvine & Emily Geoghegan

Prerequisite: introductory class in Zentangle or experience working with Zentangle patterns through books or the internet. You will write an individual prayer and then work it into a circular tile so that it is hidden. Necessary supplies will be provided.

This will be a double session.

Journal Keeping- Joan Borton

A journal can help us recognize the creative energy of God in our lives. It can serve as a companion in the process of making changes. The workshop will provide a few experiences for participants whether you are new to journals, have started and stopped writing in one or are an on-going journal writer. Please bring something to write in and a few colored pens.

This will be a double session.

Mindfulness- Based Meditation - Leanne M Tigert

This will be a time for experiencing mindfulness meditation, led in the tradition of MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) as taught by Jon Kabot- Zinn. We will be guided in sitting meditation and have time to discuss our experience and learnings about its benefits for our bodies and spirits.
