We, the South Church staff, are blessed with the privilege of nurturing, guiding and supporting this very special congregation.  We foster an environment that is professional, fun, loving and creative.  We collaborate in much of what we do, and we work closely with the leadership at South Church.

Jared Rardin        

Pastor


Jed has been our Pastor and head of staff since 2001.  A lover of preaching and storytelling, Jed can often be found encouraging people to share their stories of faith.  One of Jed's goals is that South Church always be a community where "truth can be spoken in love;"  a place where of opinion is respected as a means to more mature faith and engagement in the world.   Jed has a passion for  pastoral care, teamwork, writing, and jazz piano.  In addition to his pastoral duties, Jed leads a bible study, various retreats, the Confirmation Class, and Adult Faith Formation Classes.  Jed received his M.Div. from Andover Newton, and has served the Concord Community on various boards, including the Concord Area Task Force Against Racism and Intolerance.  He has written various devotionals for the United Church of Christ.  He is married, and he and his wife have two daughters.

Carlos Jauhola-Straight

Minister of Spiritual Growth


As our Minister of Spiritual Growth, Carlos brings his deep interest in encouraging relationship to all his efforts.  Seeking to bridge the gap between old and new, honoring our history and songs of the past, Carlos helps members of new generations find their unique voice.  Our worship has been enhanced by his introduction of color, fabrics and structures into a variety of places and settings.

Carlos serves our three active youth ministries, leads or co-leads various groups and studies, and can be found sharing a cup of coffee with parishioners and community members. Outside the church, Carlos serves on various community boards, served for 9 years as the Open and Affirming Consultant to the NH Conference of the UCC.  At home he is a father, spouse, runner, coffee-drinker, painter (of pictures), and creator of unique liturgical art and stoles. 


Carlos is always eager to share his passion for both coffee and faith.  Email him to set up a time.

Alison

Alison Nyhan

Director of Christian Education


Alison started her journey here at South Church as a Youth Advisor in 1998.  She joined the staff in 2001 as the Youth Coordinator / Superintendent of Church School.  Currently she works part-time as the Director of Christian Education.  She shares with South Church a love of working with children and creating meaningful ways for people of all ages to understand the stories of the bible.  In additional to her work at the church, she serves on the Concord Little League Board of Directors.

Lou-Ann Poirier

Office Administrator 


Lou-Ann joined the South Church staff in June 2016.  She brings many years of experience in a variety of settings and is eager to develop the kind of relationships that South Church makes available.  Lou-Ann and her husband, Bob, have three grown sons and seven grand-daughters.  When not working Lou-Ann enjoys gardening, traveling, and spending time with family.  

Lou-Ann was a member of South Church in her youth, until her family moved when she was in Junior High School.

Peg Wenzel

Coordinator of Volunteers & Communications Director

 

Peg joined the staff in January 2016 as our Coordinator of Volunteers and Communications Director.  Peg offers a warm smile and friendly welcome to everyone she meets.   As the Coordinator of Volunteers and Communications Director Peg recruits and coordinates over 175 volunteers and is responsible for e-Lation! (our electronic newsletter), website and Facebook updates and the weekly worship bulletin.  She and her husband, David, have a son, Michael. They also have a new addition to their family, their Golden Retriever named Paddles. Peg’s hobbies are photography and scrapbooking. She also likes to ski and snowshoe during the winter and cycle and paddleboard in the summer.

Sue Berlenbach

Music Director

 

Sue earned a Bachelor of Music degree with a major in music education and an applied major in voice from Crane School of Music in 1982 and a Master of Education degree with a major in educational administration from Keene State College in 1988. She is an active member of both NAfME: The National Association for Music Education and the American Choral Directors Association.

The 2016-2017 school year begins Sue’s thirty-fourth year at Kearsarge Regional Middle School in N. Sutton, NH, where she directs three choirs and teaches sixth, seventh, and eighth grade general music. In addition to her school responsibilities, Sue sings with the Concord Chorale, an auditioned community choir based in Concord, NH and maintains a private studio in her home.

Sue was born and raised on New York's Long Island. She lives in Bow, NH with her two children. Hiking, reading, gardening, and listening to music are her favorite pastimes.

Abigail Charbeneau    

Organist/Accompanist

 

Abby grew up in Woodstock, Vermont, and attended the Bridgewater Congregational Church, UCC.  In high school,Abby was asked to accompany the chorus and the musicals,and a lifelong love of musical collaboration was born.  Abby attended Skidmore College where her teacher, Dr. Pola Baytelman, nurtured her musicianship greatly.  Abby earned her Masters in Music in Piano Performance  and piano Pedagogy at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  She has taught in Illinois, Vermont, and currently in NH at The Concord Community Music School and at St. Paul’s School.  She has played for many denominations including United Church of Christ, United Methodist, Southern Baptist, Episcopal, and for many years she was the accompanist at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Concord.  Abby is delighted to be at South Church where she has returned to her spiritual roots.
Abby loves planning and participating in worship. Her goal is to create a meaningful and moving experience for those attending church.

 Carlene Bells

Carlene Ruesenberg  

Memorial Bell Choir Director

 

Carlene has been the director of the Memorial Bell choir since January of 2014. She studied music at Arizona State University and the New England Conservatory, majoring in bassoon performance. She started playing handbells in 2004 when she joined the Memorial Bells at South Church, and in 2007, became a founding member of the Granite State Ringers. Before directing the Memorial Bells, she was the director of the Senior and Junior Handbell Choirs at the Lee Church Congregational. She is a member of the Handbell Musicians of America, and currently serves on the Board of Area 1 as Education Liaison. Besides ringing, she enjoys singing, and has been a member of the Manchester Choral Society, the Concord Chorale, and the Choral Art Society of Portland, Maine.

Walt Irvine  

Sexton


Walt joined the staff as our permanent sexton in August 2015. Walt has deep ties with South Church, his family has been long time members who are active in the life of the church.  Walt brings a deep appreciation for the community of South Church and this shows in his attention to detail from cleaning to making sure people have what they need.  When not hard at work cleaning the building and  grounds Walt enjoys movies and physical fitness.
